Fresh start to 2012, Hypnotherapy with Jack Weller, practising at the: Beta Health
Clinic, 67 Marlowes, Hemel Hempstead, HP1 1LE 01442 249080 can help you with
your New Year resolution to Stop Smoking
and Weight Loss.
Stop Smoking When asked why people smoke the usual reply is that
they are addicted to the nicotine. This is a misunderstanding, to be addicted
to nicotine one has to be either a chain smoker or smoking 60 to 80 plus per
day. The main element of smoking is HABIT. Many Smoke and do not actually enjoy it but cannot
give it up. Any habit, especially smoking, is primarily in the habit part of
the mind, the subconscious. This is why clinical hypnosis-HYPNOTHERAPY is so
effective. It deals with subconscious material and can both empower the individual
as well as giving positive suggestions for change.
Weight Loss To lose weight and make sure it does not creep up
on you again one must deal with the habits conducive to the weight gain. One must also have in place a healthy
lifestyle which includes exercise and sensible eating habits.
Habits Habits which lead to weight gain or smoking are
deeply ingrained in the subconscious and under normal circumstances are
difficult to change. Suppressing the desire to eat sweet or fattening foods usually
ends in frustration and subsequent compensation by eating more of the very
thing one is trying to be free of.
Smokers who try to force themselves to give up something they think they
need or cannot do without experience a similar reaction. It is as if there are
two people inside the mind, one desperately wanting to change over to a healthier
lifestyle and the other continuing along the old path of self destruction.
Weight loss usually takes up to three sessions and
smoking between one and three.

An ingrown nail is
when the nail pieces the flesh and can be a splinter of nail digging into the
toe, which can be extremely painful. In more server cases it can become infected
producing pus. If left untreated the infection can spread and more painful to
treat.
There are genetic
factors that may make you prone to ingrown nails such as brittle nails,
inherited splaying of the toenails, the way you stand or walk, foot deformities
such as bunions and hammer toes.
Tight footwear and
socks can push the nail into the skin; sweaty feet can make the skin more
vulnerable to be pierced by the nail. However poor cutting
technique remains mostly to blame along with picking nails pulling and breaking
off edges. Nail
Surgery Partial Nail Avulsion
(PNA) is done under local aesthetic, after an assessment to identify if you are
suitable for surgery. A one hour appointment is required for this
procedure. Then a small section of the nail is removed including the growing
area at the base, the nail then becomes narrower. A chemical is then used to
stop the nail re-growing this procedure is reported to be 97% successful. You
will need to return for re-dressing, rest the foot as much as possible and wear
roomy shoes or sandals, healing time can take up to a month.

http://www.scpod.org/foot-health/foot-problems/chilblains/: Posted on Monday, October 31, 2011 10:17 PM
Chilblain advice from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists blogged by Betafeet. Many people suffer from cold feet in
winter, but not all of them develop chilblains. Whether they do or not
depends to a large extent on the efficiency of the circulation.
Chilblains are small itchy, red swellings on the skin, which can
become increasingly painful, can swell and then dry out leaving cracks
in the skin which expose the foot to the risk of infection. They occur
on the toes, particularly the smaller ones, fingers, the face,
especially the nose, and the lobes of the ears. They can also occur on
areas of the feet exposed to pressure, for instance, on a bunion or
where the second toe is squeezed by tight shoes.
Chilblains are caused by the skin's abnormal reaction to cold. Damp
or draughty conditions, dietary factors and hormonal imbalance can be
contributory factors. If the skin is chilled, and is then followed by
too rapid warming next to a fire or hot water bottle, chilblains may
result.
Who is most at risk? This condition mainly affects young adults working outdoors in cold
places or people who do not wear socks or tights in winter. Elderly
people, whose circulation is less efficient that it used to be, people
who don't take enough exercise, and those suffering from anaemia, are
also susceptible.
What are the symptoms? With the onset of the cold weather, susceptible people will
experience burning and itching on their hands and feet. On going into a
warm room, the itching and burning is intensified. There may be some
swelling or redness, and in extreme cases, the surface of the skin may
break, and sores (ulcers) may develop.
To help prevent chilblains Keep your body, feet and legs warm, especially if your circulation is
poor and your mobility is limited. The whole body, rather the just the
feet, needs to be kept warm. Trousers, long boots, tights and leg
warmers or long socks will help. You can also help prevent chilblains if you follow the a regular foot health routine.
If chilblains have developed Don't scratch them; soothing lotions such as witch hazel or calamine will take away most of the discomfort.
If the chilblain has ulcerated, apply an antiseptic dressing. If you
have diabetes or undergoing medical treatment, have the ulcer assessed
by your GP or chiropodist/podiatrist.
If the chilblain hasn't broken you can paint them with a mixture of
friar's balsam and a weak solution of iodine, which your pharmacist may
make up for you, or an over-the-counter preparation. At night, rub some
lanolin ointment well into the feet to help retain

Maternity Footwear advise from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists blogged by Betafeet of Hemel Hempstead and Tring. While a woman is pregnant she will buy
maternity clothes to fit her changing body shape but may neglect to
think about new footwear! Celebrities such as Angelina Jolie and Natasha
Kaplinsky have been photographed wearing high heels while pregnant…
Common foot problems during pregnancyHeel pain Towards the later stages of pregnancy, high
heels may become more uncomfortable. When walking, heels repeatedly hit
the ground with considerable force. When pain develops in the heel, it
can be very disabling, making every step a problem, affecting posture.
Aching and swelling During pregnancy poor circulation can lead to problems such as aching legs, swollen ankles and varicose veins.
Footwear advice: -
Avoid high heels because they put pressure on the ball of the foot, causing you to lean further back.
- Avoid wearing completely flat shoes, such as flip flops.
- Your shoes should support your feet.
- The ideal footwear for pregnant women is a pair of good running shoes made from a breathable fabric

http://www.scpod.org/foot-health/foot-problems/athletes-foot/: Posted on Monday, October 31, 2011 9:13 PM
Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection, advise from the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists posted by Betafeet in Tring and Hemel Hempstead. It
can lead to intense itching, cracked, blistered or peeling areas of
skin, redness and scaling. It can occur on moist, waterlogged skin
especially between the fourth and fifth toes, or on dry, flaky skin
around the heels or elsewhere on the foot.
What causes it? It’s caused by a number of fungal species which you can pick up from
anywhere (typically communal areas such as pools, showers and changing
rooms) or anywhere where you may walk around barefooted.
The fungus on each bit of skin that falls away from someone else’s feet can be picked up by you if you’re prone.
Once your feet have been contaminated, the warm, dark and sweaty
environment of feet cramped in shoes or trainers provides the ideal
breeding ground for the fungus. However, athlete’s foot also occurs in
dry, flaky areas. It’s quite common in summer sandal-wearers. The sun
makes your skin dry out, so it loses its natural protective oils; this
combined with the constant trauma from sandals makes them more prone to
infection.
Who gets it? Well, it’s not called athlete's foot for nothing. Walking barefoot
around swimming pools and spending your life in trainers make you more
likely to suffer. But obviously, you don’t need to be an athlete to
suffer.
Is it serious? If left untreated, the fungus can spread to the toe nails, causing
thickening and yellowing of the nail, which is much harder to treat.
Fungal infections are highly contagious and can spread to anywhere on
your skin – to your scalp, hands and even your groin, especially if you
use the same towel for your feet as for the rest of your body.
What can I do? There are many things you can do to make your feet less hospitable to fungal infections: Re-think your footwear Firstly, change your footwear on
a regular basis. There’s no point sorting your feet out if you
constantly re-infect them by putting them into damp, fungally infected
shoes. It takes 24-48 hours for shoes to dry out properly, so alternate
your shoes daily.
If you really have to wear the same pair day after day (say, if
you’re on holiday), dry them out by using the hairdryer on a cold
setting,” says Qureshi. “This will get rid of perspiration quickly
without creating more heat.”
To help shoes dry out more quickly, take any insoles out. Also,
loosen any laces and open your shoes out fully so that air can
circulate. Go for trainers with ventilation holes. If your shoes are so tight that they squeeze your toes together, this
encourages moisture to gather between your toes and encourages fungus.
Let air circulate between the toes by going for a wider, deeper toebox
instead and choose shoes made from natural materials. Of course, you should also change your socks every day too.
Wear flip-flops in the bathroom and in public showers. This will not
only ensure that you don’t leave your dead skin around for others to
pick up, but will stop you picking up other species of fungus! And never
wear anyone else’s shoes, trainers or slippers.
Re-think your footcare Treatment depends on what type of athlete’s foot you have:
For athlete's foot where the skin conditions are dry If
your athlete’s foot occurs on a dry area such as your heel, you need to
restore moisture by rubbing in an anti-fungal cream or ointment.
However, don’t forget to wash your hands thoroughly afterwards. Even
better, use disposable gloves so you don’t get the fungus on your hands
at all.
For athlete's foot where the skin conditions have been moist
This requires altogether different treatment. Wash your feet in as cold
water as you can bear, as hot water only makes your feet
fungus-friendly. Then dry them thoroughly after washing – preferably
with a separate towel or even kitchen roll. Dab dry, don’t rub as
rubbing tends to take away any healing skin. As the aim is to get rid of
the moisture - although the skin may appear flaky and dry - never use
moisturiser between your toes. Avoid powder too as it can cake up and
irritate the skin. A spirit-based preparation can help, such as surgical
spirit (it’s cooling, soothing and antiseptic). It might sting a
bit,but it evaporates the moisture and allows the skin to heal.
If your athlete's foot is mild or you’ve only just started to suffer,
rethinking your foot hygiene may help. Surgical spirit may be enough to
see it off. However if an antifungal medication is required, your
pharmacist can recommend one.
The mistake most people make is to stop the hygiene regime, shoe
rotation and/or medication once their symptoms have gone. Even though
your symptoms may disappear after several days or weeks, the fungus can
lie dormant and could eventually reappear if the environment is right.
Some products require continued treatment for many weeks - always follow
the instructions. Also, be alert to symptoms so that you can deal with
any problems straight away.
Though you should avoid using anti-fungal powders between the toes, they’re good for dusting inside shoes and trainers.
What can a podiatrist do? You should be able to get rid of athlete’s foot on your own, but a
podiatrist may help you pinpoint the best treatment for your particular
type of athlete’s foot. Your podiatrist can also help if the fungal
infection has spread to your nails, by reducing the thickness and
cutting back the nails, thereby exposing the infected nailbed to a
lighter, cooler environment. Nail infections don’t respond to topical treatments. You need oral
medication (i.e. tablets) to kill the fungus in nails. If the fungus is
only in the nail and not elsewhere, it is probably caused by an injury.
An injury allows the fungus to creep in and multiply under the nail.
This can affect the substance of the nail which may become crusty,
discoloured and deformed. This oral medication needed, however, can have
side effects. So if you have other medical conditions or are on other
medication, your GP or podiatrist may recommend that you don’t take it.

Chinese
Herbal Medicine is one of the great herbal systems of the world, with
an unbroken tradition going back to the 3rd century BC. Throughout its
history it has continually developed in response to changing clinical
conditions, and has been sustained by research into every aspect of its
use. This process continues today with the development of modern medical
diagnostic techniques and knowledge.
Because
of its systematic approach and clinical effectiveness it has for
centuries had a very great influence on the theory and practice of
medicine in the East, and more recently has grown rapidly in popularity
in the West. It still forms a major part of health care provision in
China, and is provided in state hospitals alongside western medicine.
Chinese medicine includes all oriental traditions emerging from
Southeast Asia that have their origins in China.
Practitioners
may work within a tradition that comes from Japan, Vietnam, Taiwan or
Korea. It is a complete medical system that is capable of treating a
very wide range of conditions. It includes herbal therapy, acupuncture,
dietary therapy, and exercises in breathing and movement (tai chi and qi
gong). Some or several of these may be employed in the course of
treatment.
Chinese
Herbal Medicine, along with the other components of Chinese medicine,
is based on the concepts of Yin and Yang. It aims to understand and
treat the many ways in which the fundamental balance and harmony between
the two may be undermined and the ways in which a person's Qi or
vitality may be depleted or blocked. Clinical strategies are based upon
diagnosis of patterns of signs and symptoms that reflect an imbalance.
However,
the tradition as a whole places great emphasis on lifestyle management
in order to prevent disease before it occurs. Chinese medicine
recognises that health is more than just the absence of disease and it
has a unique capacity to maintain and enhance our capacity for well
being and happiness.

skills up to date;
§ patient
confidentiality is respected and proper care is taken with patient information;
§ we

informed choice;
§ appropriate
referral pathways exist for clients, who need specialist care; and
§ practice
working methods are constantly reviewed.
We therefore feel that you can be confident
in the care that you receive within this practice.

Local podiatrist offers
preventative advice and treatment for arthritis Hidden
away in socks and shoes at the end of our bodies, our feet can often be
neglected and our foot health overlooked. As part of the annual Feet
for Life Monthin June, The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists
is raising awareness of all aspects of foot care and foot health, with a
specific focus this year on arthritis.
Arthritis is often
associated with older age, and while you are more likely to develop arthritis
as you get older, it can occur at any age and usually develops between the ages
of 20 and 50. There are also steps you can take to help prevent your chances of
developing the condition later in life.
Knees and feet are particularly
prone to arthritis and The Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists is urging
people to be vigilant about pain in these areas to help aid detection and
improve quality of life and treatment.
Judith Sullivan from Betafeet in both Tring and Hemel Hempstead explained:
“Arthritis
of any form can cause great pain for the sufferer but the good news is that there
are things you can do to help prevent arthritis and there are also ways to ease
the symptoms if you do develop it. Maintaining a healthy weight and keeping
active through low impact sports such as swimming and cycling can help to
prevent arthritis in later life, as can choosing supportive footwear which
reduces pressure on the joints. The key to treatment is early detection so if
you do experience pain, swelling and stiffness in your joints, see a podiatrist
or health professional for advice.”
WHAT IS ARTHRITIS?
There are numerous forms
of arthritis but Osteoarthritis (OA) and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) are common.
OA is the most common and
is caused by trauma and stress to the cartilage around the joints which can be
as a result of general wear and tear, or an injury. OA is very common in foot
joints.
RA is one of the more
severe types of arthritis although it is much less common. RA affects around 2
per cent of the UK population and is twice are prevalent in women than men. RA occurs
when the body’s immune system turns on itself, causing inflammation in the
joint lining.
TREATMENT:
If someone is experiencing
problems with their feet, then often a podiatrist is their first point of call
and can help identify if it’s arthritis that is causing the problem, and
consequently refer the patient depending on the severity of the disease.
If you have already been
diagnosed with osteoarthritis,
treatment may involve non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, footwear, insoles,
or other help. But living with the pain is not inevitable – something can always be done to help control the disease and help your
quality of life. Talk to your podiatrist, GP or consultant about what can be
done.
If you are diagnosed with
rheumatoid arthritis, regular checks are important, at least annually for feet,
according to the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). People with
RA are likely to need stronger medication and should be seen by a specialist
rheumatologist. As medical treatment advances, more help than ever is available
to aid ongoing foot problems. There is now good evidence for the use of insoles
and footwear helping people with rheumatoid arthritis, particularly in the
early years, soon after diagnosis. Your podiatrist can help by aligning your
joints to ease pain and prescribing insoles and footwear to limit joint damage.
If the arthritis is severe, surgery may help. WHAT CAN YOU DO?
Early detection: Arthritis is more easily treated if detected early.
It is therefore important for people to self-monitor and be aware of any
developing symptoms.
Regular exercise: Taking part in regular exercise and activity
throughout your life is great for reducing the effects of arthritis however it’s
important that you choose low impact sports that don’t bear heavily on limbs
and joints. Activities such as cycling and swimming are great and over time can
actually increase the thickness of the cartilage in the joints.
Footwear: Arthritis is caused by inflammation and wear and tear
to the joints which may be caused or exacerbated by wearing high heels and
unsupportive footwear. For general day wear, try to wear a low heeled, round
toed shoe of around 2-3cm in height with shock absorbent sole and lace/strap to
help minimise damage to the joints. When doing exercise, ensure you wear
trainers that are fitted and designed specifically for that form of exercise.
Weight loss: Try to remain a healthy weight. Arthritis is caused
by mechanical stress on the joints and extra weight can exacerbate the problem.
Diet: There is currently no conclusive evidence about diet
and arthritis but expert’s advice eating a healthy, balanced diet to limit any
problems. A Mediterranean diet that includes lots of olive oil and Omega is
said to be good for the joints. Dietary supplements such as glucosamine or
chondroitin may help make the cartilage more resilient, but evidence is not yet
conclusive.
This June, why not head down to Betafeet
in Hemel Hempstead also Tring and have a foot health check with a qualified

 The
podiatrists and chiropodists at Betafeet, in Hemel Hempstead and Tring are
justifiably proud of the high standards of professional healthcare they deliver
to their patients. In fact the practice is accredited by the Society of
Chiropodists and Podiatrists in recognition of this.
We respect our senior citizens as individuals
and are fully aware of the impact poor nail care has on your everyday life and
mobility. Long nails can become a problem even when there is nothing else wrong
with your feet. Sometimes an extra nail cut between your regular appointments
can make all the difference.
Sadly
you may find the NHS no longer offers a professional toenail cutting service. But The
Good News Is:
Here at the Betafeet our highly
trained Chiropodists will cut straight forward toenails after an initial assessment for a minimal cost of
just £20 general appointments are £40.
We will provide you with a professional
overview of your foot health, cut your toe nails using sterile nail clippers
and a sterile nail file to reduce the risk of cross infection. This is our Gold
Standard nail cutting service.
It is
our intention to keep you comfortable, safe and mobile.
If
you would like to try this service, please ring 01442 822990 and mention the Simply
Toenails service when booking an appointment.
*If
it is your first appointment at the clinic we have to carry out an assessment
of your foot care needs. This is a requirement of the Health Professions
Council, our regulatory body. This initial appointment will cost more. Please
ask for details. We look
forward to welcoming you.

Podiatry
- Chiropody Involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders and
diseases of the feet. We are highly skilled health professionals who are
trained who have been trained to prevent, diagnose, treat and
rehabilitate disorders of the foot and lower leg. Do you have foot
problems?
Pain in the feet or lower legs is usually
the sign of something wrong. Whether its corns and calluses rubbing, or
just wear and tear on your feet you should get them checked out with
Betafeet in Tring or Hemel Hempstead. Many people today suffer with
their feet, when a simple trip to a podiatrist/chiropodist could make
their life much easier.
Lasting a lifetime
Don't
forget your feet have to last a lifetime and are constantly under
pressure all day. Looking after them will ensure you get the most from
them.We recommend you visit your Podiatrist for regular foot checks,
this can prevent foot problems before they occur by visiting your
Podiatrist for advise.
Chiropody - Podiatry treatments include: - General foot care
- Nail cutting
- Nail Surgery for ingrown nails
- Cosmetic toenail reconstruction
- Corns and hard skin
- Cryosurgery for verrucas
- Dry Needling for verrucas
- Diabetic Foot Assessment
- Bio-mechanical Assessment
- Muscular-Skeletal disorders arising from poor foot function
- Custom made foot orthotics or insoles
• Biomechanical Assessment .•
Your podiatrist/chiropodist can see how your feet move and make
recommendations for treatment, ensuring your feet are in the best
possible shape.
They may use a treadmill to determining
the effects of dysfunctional feet on knees, hips and lower back. After
analyzing your feet the podiatrist/chiropodist is likely to prescribe
orthotics. These are designed to fit your feet and help correct the way
your foot works.
Bespoke Orthotics or Insoles are
devices that are placed in the shoes to restore the balance and dynamic
function of the foot. If you suffer from foot, knee or hip pain or
dysfunction and its resulting after effects we would welcome the
opportunity to make an assessment of the problem and in most cases come
up with a practical lasting solution.
Orthotics are
special inserts that have been individually designed to help ease
pressure, aches and pains. Using information from your assessment and a
cast they are sculptured to fit your foot and reposition the bones so
that you foot works correctly.
Ingrown Toenails
An
ingrown nail is when the nail pieces the flesh and can be a splinter of
nail digging into the toe, which can be extremely painful. In more
server cases it can become infected producing pus. If left untreated
the infection can spread and more painful to treat.
There
are genetic factors that may make you prone to ingrown nails such as
brittle nails, inherited splaying of the toenails, the way you stand or
walk, foot deformities such as bunions and hammer toes.
Tight
footwear and socks can push the nail into the skin, sweaty feet can
make the skin more vulnerable to be pierced by the nail.
However poor cutting technique remains mostly to blame along with picking nails pulling and breaking off edges.
Nail Surgery
Partial
Nail Avultion (PNA) are done under local anesthetic, after an
assessment to identify if you are suitable for surgery. A one hour
appointment is required for this procedure. Then a small section of the
nail is removed including the growing area at the base, the nail then
becomes narrower. A chemical is then used to stop the nail regrowing
this procedure is reported to be 97% successful. You will need to return
for re-dressing, rest the foot as much as possible and wear roomy shoes
or sandals, healing time can take up to a month.
Heel Pain
Heel
pain can be attributed to a number of reasons; for effective treatment
the cause needs to be determined. Most heel pain is caused by a
mechanical injury although it can be due to a back problem. There are
many types of heel pain which require different treatments such as:
Plantar Fasciitis Pain
in the band that stretches from the heel to the toes (fascia) which is
most painful when taking first steps in the day or after rest. Treatment
involves stretching and exercises or shoe inserts (orthoses) to alter
foot function and reduce the tension of the fascia.
Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome May
feel like a burning tingling feeling under the heel and in the arch of
the foot and sometimes can cause loss of sensation on the bottom of the
foot. This is caused by compression of the Tibial nerve as it passes
inside the ankle. Special shoe inserts (orthoses) can reduce the tension
on the nerve.
Severs Disease This
self limiting painful condition is also known as osteochondrosis and
occurs in growing bones when the heel bone suffers a temporary loss of
blood supply normally affecting children between 8 and 12 years of age.
Achilles Tendonosis Occurs
when the achilles tendon is placed under duress resulting in small
tears causing injury and swelling within the tendon often referred to as
tenonitis. Treatment involves strengthening exercises and raising the
hight of the gheel with an insole (orthoses).

Our
Chartered Physiotherapists are expert in the examination of movement,
posture and identification of any dysfunction in these areas. This
expertise is informed by in depth knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics and
physiology.
Treatment is by mobilisation or
manipulation of joints, nerves and muscles, and guidance on posture and
exercise. Muscles, joints, nerves and ligaments all work together to
make a healthy body, but balance can be upset by injury or overuse or
sustaining the wrong posture. Core skills used by physiotherapists
include manual therapy, therapeutic exercise and the application of
electro physical modalities and/or acupuncture.
Our
Physiotherapist will complete a thorough assessment that may include
your health history, evaluation of pain and movement patterns, strength,
and joint range of motion, reflexes, sensation and cardio respiratory
status. After assessment they will proceed with necessary treatment.
Physiotherapy is beneficial for conditions such as:
• Back and neck pain • Headaches • Sports Injuries/Soft Tissue injuries • Muscle and joint pain/Postural Dysfunction • Post-operative, acute or chronic injury • Arthritis • Posture and alignment problems • Osteoarthritis knees • Sciatica • Women's health • Adolescent and children's injuries

Did you know that
Acupuncture can help with a wide variety of problems experienced by
people all over the country? These problems include back pain, neck
pain, frozen shoulder, digestive problems and many more.
Acupuncture
is an holistic health care system that regards pain and illness,
whether physical or mental, to be a sign that the body is out of
balance. Because traditional acupuncture considers every bodily function
to be connected and interdependent, it recognizes the role emotions
play in illness and disease. The overall aim of treatment is to restore
the body's equilibrium.
Because
of the wide range of different conditions, Martin Silliton offers a wide range
of different treatments. These include acupuncture, traditional Chinese
herbal medicine, cupping and massage.

Cranial Osteopathy for Babies and Children It
is a common belief that babies and children should have no structural
stresses or strains in their bodies, because they are 'so young'. The
reality is very different. Birth is one of the most stressful events of
our lives. The baby is subjected to enormous forces, as the uterus
pushes to expel the baby against the natural resistance of the birth
canal. The baby has to turn and twist as it
squeezes through the bony pelvis, on its short but highly stimulating
and potentially stressful journey. The baby's head has the remarkable
ability to absorb these stresses in a normal delivery. In order to
reduce the size of the head, the soft bones overlap, bend and warp as
the baby descends. The baby's chin is normally well tucked down towards
its chest to reduce the presenting diameter of the head.
Many
babies are born with odd shaped heads as a result. In the first few
days, the head can usually be seen to gradually lose the extreme moulded
shape, as the baby suckles, cries and yawns. However, this unmoulding
process is often incomplete, especially if the birth has been difficult.
As a result, the baby may have to live with some very uncomfortable
stresses within its head and body.
What problems can cranial osteopathy help with in babies? Some
babies cope extremely well with even quite severe retained moulding and
compression, and are contented and happy. For others it is a different
story, and they can display a variety of problems. Cranial osteopathy
may help with:
Crying, screaming, irritability.
The baby may be uncomfortable, with a constant feeling of pressure in
the head. This may be made worse by the extra pressure on the head when
lying down.
Feeding difficulties. The
baby takes a long time to feed and one feed merges into the next. They
may be a 'windy' feeder. Feeding is difficult and tiring due to
mechanical stresses through the head, face and throat. The nerves to the
tongue and face muscles may be irritated as they exit from the skull,
which makes sucking difficult.
Sickness, colic and wind. Regurgitation
of milk between feeds, bouts of prolonged crying due to colic and wind.
Often worse in the evening. The nerve to the stomach may be irritated
as it exits from the base of the skull, which can impair digestion. The
diaphragm between the chest and the abdomen may be stressed or
distorted, which further compromises both digestion and the ability of
the stomach to retain its contents. Stress from a difficult or fast
birth can leave the digestive system in tension trapping wind. Any
strain through the umbilical cord, for instance if it was around the
baby's neck, can add to strains in the abdomen.
In
a research study conducted by Osteopath Clive Hayden, into the effects
of cranial osteopathic treatment on babies, some parents perceived the
following changes in their children’s behavior: Reduced colicky crying, improved sleep, less unsettled irritable behavior and increased quiet happy spells.
Sleep disturbances The
baby sleeps for only short periods, and may sleep little in the day (or
night!). They wake to the slightest noise- "jumpy".The tension on the
bony and membranous casing of the skull keeps the baby's nervous system
in a persistently alert state.

A Podiatrist is a health professional who deals with the prevention,
diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of medical and surgical conditions of
the feet and lower limbs.
Both terms refer to practitioners who specialise in the diagnosis and
treatment of foot pathologies. ‘Chiropody’ has been used chiefly in the UK
while ‘Podiatry’ is more commonly used in the rest of the English speaking
world.
Since July 2005 both terms have been protected this means that the
titles can only be used by practitioners registered with the Health Professions
Council (HPC). Registration is dependent upon successful completion of a
recognised course of training and a continued professional education.
The scope of practice of a Podiatrist is often much wider than people
realise. The work falls into four key categories:
· General clinics · Biomechanics · High Risk Management · Surgery
This will include treatments, assessments and advice on the following:
General
·
Corns and Callous (hard skin) ·
Verrucae (Plantar warts) ·
Skin disorders and infections ·
Nail Pathology ·
Footwear Advice ·
Foot health education and self-care advice
High Risk Management
Which incudes systemic disorders that affect the feet such as diabetes,
arthritic and rheumatological conditions, circulatory, nervous and

Simply Toenails
The
podiatrists and chiropodists at Betafeet, in Hemel Hempstead and Tring are
justifiably proud of the high standards of professional healthcare they deliver
to their patients.
Here at the Betafeet our highly
trained Chiropodists will cut straight forward toenails for a minimal cost of
just £20 general appointments are £40.
